reading.

If your tax rate is the same when you put money in as it is when you take money out, Roth and traditional produce the exact same spendable amount.

Let me show you the math. Say you have $10,000 to invest. You go the traditional route. No taxes now. It doubles to $20,000. You pay 25% on the way out. That is $5,000 in taxes. You walk away with $15,000 to spend.

Now go the Roth route. You pay 25% upfront. $2,500 gone. You invest $7,500. It doubles to $15,000. No taxes on the way out. You walk away with $15,000 to spend.

Same number. Every time.

This is what I call the Same Spendable principle. Once you understand it, the entire Roth conversation gets a lot clearer, because now you know exactly what you are solving for. The only thing that changes the outcome is a difference in your tax rate, now versus later.

TOP 5 KEY POINTS in this post:

If your tax rate is the same going in as it is coming out, Roth and traditional produce the exact same spendable amount in retirement. Every time.

The only variable that actually matters in the Roth vs. traditional decision is whether your tax rate will be higher or lower in retirement than it is today.

You are being marketed to. Some advisors and financial personalities use fear about taxes to get you to act. The math is not that scary.

Maxing out your retirement contributions in Roth is worth more than maxing them out in traditional, because Roth dollars are 100% yours and traditional dollars are a partnership with the IRS.

Diversifying your tax status across Roth, traditional, and non-retirement accounts gives you degrees of freedom. That optionality is one of the most underrated advantages in retirement planning.

Thanks for reading Zacc Call Money Education! He was paying taxes at 30% to avoid taxes at 12%. That is the wrong call. Traditional made more sense. If you put $23,500 into a traditional 401(k), some of that money already belongs to the IRS. You just do not know it yet. I like to say you are in a partnership with the IRS on traditional money. The split is your tax rate. Put $23,500 into a Roth 401(k) and 100% of that is yours. Every dollar. You want degrees of freedom.

An engineer taught me this term. Degrees of freedom means you are setting yourself up so that in the future you have options, not just one path. If all your retirement money is in traditional accounts, every dollar you spend is a taxable event. But if you have a mix of traditional, Roth, and non-retirement brokerage accounts, you can pull from different sources based on what the tax environment looks like in any given year. You can stay in a lower bracket. You can realize capital gains at 0%. You can avoid Medicare surcharges. It is like sitting in front of an airplane cockpit with a lot of levers to pull.

Here is what retirement taxes look like for a well-prepared couple. Social Security comes in. Much of it is taxed at a low rate or not at all, depending on your other income. A pension or rental income stacks in at the 10 and 12% brackets. Then there is headroom. You can pull traditional IRA money at 12%. You can harvest long-term capital gains at 0%. You can draw from Roth or an HSA with zero tax cost. A couple with $150,000 to $250,000 of annual income in retirement might have an effective federal tax rate of 8 to 12%. That is not a tax nightmare. That is a well-structured plan.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Sold

There is a financial services presentation I have seen more than once where an advisor puts a $5 bill, a $10 bill, and a $20 bill on the table and asks a client which one they want to pay taxes on. The client picks the $5. Then the advisor sells them on whatever product lets them avoid taxes later.

The problem is that the math only works if your tax rate changes. If your rate stays the same, it does not matter which bill you picked. And if your rate drops in retirement, which it often does, you may have been better off going the other direction the whole time.

I have also seen this framing from well-known financial personalities online. The claim is that traditional only beats Roth if your tax rate drops dramatically in retirement. That word dramatically is just not accurate. Even a 1% difference in your favor matters. You do not need a dramatic drop to win with traditional. You just need a drop.

The reason this kind of advice gets amplified is not because it is right. It is because fear gets people to pick up the phone. My goal this season is the opposite of that. Be aware of taxes. Not afraid of them.

The mailers that say you will lose 70% of your IRA to taxes? I ran the math on that. To make it work, you would need over $30 million in assets, income over approximately $700,000 a year, a large taxable estate at death, and heirs also earning over approximately $700,000. That applies to a vanishingly small fraction of the population. For everyone else, retirement taxes are manageable. You just need to plan for them.

Where We Go From Here

This episode is the foundation. If you understand that the Same Spendable principle is real, and that tax rate differences are the only thing that actually changes the outcome, you are ready for what comes next.

In Episode 2, Tyson Long, one of our senior wealth advisors at Capita, and I will walk through eight advanced reasons to go Roth or traditional. Required minimum distributions, Medicare Part B premiums, Social Security taxability, and more. The nuances that matter for people with more complex situations or those getting closer to retirement.

Subscribe to get the rest of the Roth season.

You can follow the full Season 2 playlist here:

The goal of this entire season is straightforward. Your employer paid you, taxes came out, maybe a 401(k) contribution did too, and whatever was left hit your bank account. You built your life around that rhythm. And then retirement arrives and flips the whole thing over.

You are no longer contributing to retirement. You are withdrawing from it. Healthcare is not withheld from a paycheck anymore. Social Security has rules you have never had to think about before. You have accounts in different places, possibly a pension, maybe some rental income, and someone is asking you to turn all of that into a monthly number you can actually live on.

No wonder it feels overwhelming.

The good news is there is a logical sequence to this. It does not require you to figure everything out at once. It just requires you to work through the right steps in the right order.

Start by Gathering What You Have

Before any decisions get made, you need to know what is in front of you. That means pulling together your income sources: Social Security, any pension, rental income, annuities, part-time work. And getting rough balances on your retirement accounts. Not exact to the dollar. Just a clear enough picture that you can start working with it.

This conversation is aimed specifically at people in their 50s and 60s who are approaching retirement or already there. If you are 30, Social Security will likely look different by the time you file. But if you are ten years out, it is time to start assembling the puzzle.

Social Security As the Anchor

Once you have gathered the information, Social Security is where the analysis starts. Everyone who qualifies has what is called a Primary Insurance Amount. That is the benefit you would receive at your full retirement age. Nearly every other filing decision (early, late, somewhere in between) is measured against that number.

The decision of when to file is more layered than most people realize. Filing at 62 gets you money sooner, but the benefit is permanently reduced. Waiting until 70 means a much larger monthly check, but you have gone eight years without one. The point where both strategies produce the same total lifetime income is called the break-even age, and that number is different for everyone.

Three things make the calculation harder than it looks. First, people forget to factor in cost-of-living adjustments. Social Security increases with inflation, and a larger benefit compounds into a larger annual raise over time. Second, if you are married, Social Security is a team sport. One spouse’s filing decision can unlock or foreclose options for the other. You cannot look at it individually. Third, filing early may allow you to leave your 401(k) or IRA balances invested longer. Waiting to file for Social Security may mean supplementing your cashflow from your investments, that money could have stayed in your portfolio growing. That missed growth pushes the real break-even age out, sometimes by years. We calculate two break-even ages: The straight break-even (mentioned earlier) and possibly more important, the break-even age with growth.

You should know the math. That does not mean one option is always better. It means you should make the decision with your eyes open.

Layer In Your Fixed Income, Then Your Portfolio

Once you have modeled a Social Security strategy, you add everything else with a reliable, fixed payment. Pension income. Rental income. Annuities. A seller-financed note from a business sale. Whatever hits your bank account regardless of what the market is doing. That total fixed income number is an important anchor. Some people have very little. Others have more than they need. Either way, knowing it tells you how much weight your investment portfolio actually has to carry.

From there, you figure out a safe withdrawal rate from your accounts. Most people have heard of the 4% rule. If you have $1 million, the 4% rule says you can take $40,000 out each year without running out of money over a 30-year period. It is a reasonable place to start, but it was designed to survive every historical scenario, including the worst ones. In practice, most people can spend a bit more than 4% and be just fine, as long as they are willing to trim spending modestly when markets have a difficult year.

Retirement is not a flight path with no pilot on board. There is a pilot. That is you (and potentially an advisor). You can make adjustments.

If you want to go deeper on how to structure your portfolio around this, including how to set aside a few years of safe, accessible funds so a market drop does not force you into panic-selling, I cover all of it step by step on my YouTube channel.

Taxes in Retirement Are Better Than You Have Been Told

The next step is managing inflation and taxes on your income. Here is something worth saying plainly: most retirees are taxed at a much lower rate than they expect.

Take a married couple bringing in $100,000 of fully taxable income. Under today’s tax code, (rounding all these numbers for ease) after the standard deduction of $30,000, they are paying 10% on the first $20,000 and 12% on the next $50,000. That works out to an effective federal tax rate of around 5%. The voices on the radio telling retirees they will lose 70% of their wealth to taxes are doing people a real disservice. The retirees I know generally have a lower tax rate than the working people I know.

That said, understanding your tax picture still matters. Not because the bill is scary, but because there are real opportunities inside it. If your income is lower in a given year, that may be the right time for a Roth conversion. If you are near a Medicare income threshold, it is worth knowing before you make a move. These are annual conversations, not set-it-and-forget-it decisions.

Build a Plan You Can Actually Monitor

The last step is creating a structure you can live with and review. That means mapping out the next five to ten years of cash flow, deciding how often you will check in on taxes and investments, and answering one honest question: how much am I willing to adjust my spending if markets do not cooperate?

The more flexible you are willing to be, the more confidently you can spend today. And this is not a one-time exercise. Cash flow, investments, and taxes should be looked at every single year.

Most people are not that great with willpower and self-control, but we are really good at following systems that are already set up. The goal is to design a system that makes this annual review feel natural, not like something you keep putting off.

This is Season 1, Episode 1 of The Guided Path, a series built to take you from foundational concepts all the way through advanced financial planning across the major financial planning categories.
